Contribute page example

OpenOffice has a good contribute page: http://contributing.openoffice.org/index.html

The getting involved page at http://freeculture.org/get-involved/ takes an interesting approach with the "if you've got [x] minutes" concept.

Projects/Products/Download

Skierpage, maybe also others, please see bug 325485 about the Projects/Products/Download page merge, mentioned in the current action items. This should be solved very soon. (I'm grouping all comments relating to that under this point.) --KaiRo 06:21, 9 May 2008 (PDT)

Tired Mozilla Downloads page

http://www.mozilla.org/products/ prominently says "Looking for other Mozilla software?" that takes you to http://www.mozilla.org/download.html. But:

  • Its left-hand badge lists "Mozilla" (1.x) as one of only three products.
  • It points directly to FTP downloads for some projects but for others links to an information page.

I guess some of these are significant download pages and the info about Mac OS 9 might be of interest, but I think it would be better to merge this information with the projects page, have Products link to that, and kill download.html. -- Skierpage 17:56, 8 May 2008 (PDT)

Still uneasy Products / Projects overlap, kill the former

The Products tab takes you to http://www.mozilla.org/products/ , but that lists "Featured Mozilla Projects", with no link to the full projects list. Meanwhile the front page's _All projects..._ link takes you to http://www.mozilla.org/projects/ which also lists "Featured Projects" but sliced up different ways: it lists what most people think of as products as "Mozilla Applications"

The solution is to be aggressive and merge the two damn pages. "Products" is just the standard web site term that people look for, but Mozilla's products are part of its mission which leads to all its projects. So make the Products tab link to /projects/ and make /products/ a redirect. More pages with more story doesn't help! -- Skierpage 18:08, 8 May 2008 (PDT)

Polishing projects/list.html

Needs a TOC for each area.

Be consistent about using project name or the area to refer to things.

Promote the Tools part to its own section, so that Bugzilla, Bonsai, etc. get their own page.

JavaScript lacks the codenames SpiderMonkey, ActionMonkey, etc.

JavaScript Debugging lacks the codename "Venkman"

Maybe should have an "Inactive projects" section

With that clean-up, the only things on download.html that aren't in projects/list.html are "Netscape Messaging Access SDK", the link to Mozilla 1.x in the top-left badge, and "Looking for software for Mac OS 9?".

Reply: Yes, we know this page needs work. It's currently just a copy of the old projects page so that the links we had there aren't completely lost. We'll go through the projects with this site restructuring project, and try to get to a state where this full list gives a current and good picture of the current state of those. Thanks for your input, whoever will go through that list should revisit those comments in that work. --KaiRo 06:35, 9 May 2008 (PDT)

Update mozilla.1x

http://www.mozilla.org/products/mozilla1.x/ looks modern but is old, old.

Reply: We have been discussing this issue in the recent planning meeting, we think replacing the current products and download pages with the new projects page (with a redirect) solves part of this, we might later go and replace the Mozilla 1.x page with something like what http://www.mozilla.org/start/ has, i.e. pointing people to Firefox, Thunderbird and SeaMonkey instead. I think we should have a small link for people to get old releases from archives, but those should be clearly marked as deprecated, old, unsupported versions. --KaiRo 06:30, 9 May 2008 (PDT)
