Mozilla Drumbeat - Help Organize A Local Event

Help build a community that will keep the web open for the next 100 years. Organize a local Drumbeat event in your city.

Want to make the web more open, participatory, fun? Looking for other people who feel the same way and want to work on cool open web projects? Organizing a Mozilla Drumbeat event in your city is a good way to start making the web better. Scroll down to find out how.

With the aim of finding the next cool ideas that will make the web more open, Mozilla created Drumbeat. Drumbeat is a global community of Mozillians who *use* web technology in new ways to understand, participate and take control of their online lives. At a practical level, Drumbeat community members use web technology to *make things* that improve and protect the open internet. They run local events where people propose and work on these practical projects. They encourage others to get involved. See more information about Drumbeat in this video.

Drumbeat is for anyone who wants to lend their skills and creativity to the cause of creating a better internet. Teachers. Artists. Lawyers. Filmmakers. Students. Plumbers. Web developers. Anyone who uses -- and cares about -- the open Internet. These are not the traditional contributors to the Mozilla project. But we believe that everyday Internet users have ideas and energy that can help make the web better.

The first step for Drumbeat will consist of local events in which people can talk about their ideas and projects to make the web better and get together to work on them. Because Drumbeat is a global initiative, and because Brazil is one of the most exciting places in the world for open and participatory projects to flourish, the first Drumbeat events ever will happen in Rio (March 18) and Sao Paulo (March 22).

Mozilla is looking for people who would like to organize Drumbeat events in other Brazilian cities in April, May or June. If you want to organize a Drumbeat event in your city, please send us an email (bmagrani@mozilla.com) as soon as possible. You should briefly tell us:

  • Who are you? Why do you want to organize a Drumbeat event?
  • What kind of people will you invite? How many do you hope will come?
  • Where and when do you want to organize the event? Do you have a location you can use (school, community centre, etc.)?
  • What Drumbeat project ideas that you'd most like to talk about at your event? They could be from this existing list or project that you propose?

Based on these proposals, Mozilla will bring up to five organizers to Sao Paulo on March 21 and 22 for a event organizer training and to attend the second local event. We will also provide up to R$500 (~US273) to cover local event costs like food and venue.

The evaluation of proposals will be conducted on a rolling basis, but if you wish to participate in the first events in Rio or São Paulo, please send your proposal by no later than March 1st.
