WHY
Title Mobile Webmaker
Short Description
Include a tweet-length summary description of the challenge.
What do the next billion web users want? Mozillians love to tell world about Mozilla. Now they can tell Mozilla about the world. Collect real information about what problems the next billion users want to solve and how to improve mobile Webmaker to address those needs.

Context
Does this challenge cover the entire initiative? Or does this challenge cover a subset or one piece of the overall program? Use this section to inspire, enable and support our volunteer communities to have real impact on our mission, starting with our 2014 goals.
Mozilla already has a major initiative to enable local content creation, both with technology (Webmaker for Mobile), partnerships (GSMA and operators), and educational curriculum (Webmaker, web literacy). One of the critical things we know we need however is to ensure that the apps we build for users around the world work for those people, solve their needs, help them succeed. And we can’t do that without good, on-the-ground research about what real people need, want, etc.

This is why we want to invite the whole Mozilla community worldwide to be part of this project, and allow users from all over the world to have a voice in how we build Webmaker for mobile devices.

We don’t just want to build a product for the next billion, we want to build it with them.

This challenge is a significant part of the ground-research for the Webmaker app. It will help us gather insights from a wide range of countries and benefit from the volunteer’s local expertise, leading to a better product.

Impact Goal
Why would this motivate our volunteers?
Grow Adoption of Webmaker
Motivation
  • have a real impact on the things we think are most important to Mozilla's mission.
  • integrate volunteers into the areas where employees are focused, which means more support, resources, and training become natural.
  • develop new valuable skills in research, testing and participatory design.
  • have a positive impact on the future of the web in emerging countries.
WHAT
Problem Statement
What do we want people to do.
i) conduct interviews with "the next billion web users" and ii) host user testing events that include interviews from (i)
HOW
Approach
What’s the approach? Do you have an existing process, system or framework to guide the contribution? What tools and resources will the community be provided?
[[Contribution_Challenge_Approach::Sept 29:
  • Identify and on-board betatesters from the Mozilla community in key regions (Michelle)
    • San Emmanuel James (Uganda)
    • Hezron Obuchele (Kenya)
    • Sayak Sarkar (India)
    • Emma Irwin (Canada)
    • Luis Sánchez (Mexico)
    • Alex Wafula (Kenya)
    • Gauthamraj Elango (India)
    • Lawrence Kisuuki (Uganda)
    • Mahayala Khan (Bangladesh)
  • Draft simple teaching kit. Include the interview script. (Laura, Jan)
  • Identify the mobile Webmaker templates that will be tested at events and how (Bobby)

Oct 6:

  • Review teaching kit with betatesters. (Michelle)
  • Refine feedback systems especially for interviews and template testing. (Laura)
  • Develop and ship physical kits to event hosts (Laura, Michelle, Sarah)

Oct 13:

  • Betatest the teaching kit with community organizers. Iterate. (contribution here!)

Oct 25:

  • At Mozfest, train people on how to run the script. (contribution here!)

Nov 3:

  • Run events with interested community in target countries. And encourage rest of community to join in and think about new places to go to. (contribution here!)

Nov 24:

  • Celebrate the people who contributed (Adam)

Dec 1:

  • Report back and debrief on process. Analysis of community's effectiveness to make impact. (Michelle)
  • Qualitative analysis begins from interview & event results (Laura)]]
Metrics
How will you measure both completion and positive impact?
  • 1000s of interviews conducted
  • 100 of workshops
Skills and experiences to support volunteers (from employees)
What particular skill set is required or desired to support the volunteers [presumably this is from employees] to support this activity ? What skills will be taught and improved?
  • Education on doing research, what does it mean, why it’s important, how to do it well (possible by Jan Chipchase?)
  • Interview kits and tips
  • Workshops kits
  • Regular feedback and communication about the status of the project
  • A support email address for any questions and help needed - appmakerchallenge@mozilla.org
Skills and experiences of volunteers
What particular skill set is required or desired from contributors? This will vary by challenge.
For Workshops:
  • Facilitation skills: appetite to meet new people, desire to teach and to guide users from all levels and backgrounds
  • Observation and listening skills: being able to observe user’s reactions when discovering Appmaker, figuring out the little things that users won’t tell you directly but could be important for the product, understanding user’s frustrations...emotional intelligence and patience !
  • Ability to give feedback and underlying problems & recommendations.

For Interviews:

  • Ability to reach out to people and make them feel comfortable
  • Listening
  • Understanding and analysing
WHEN
Est Launch Date
When do you expect this project to be live?
2014/10/24
Timeframe
When does the work need to start and stop? Can the work be done asynchronously or does it need to be a coordinated effort?
Async prep. Events and interviews in real-time.
WHERE
Location
Are there specific regions where the work needs to happen? Can the work be done in a distributed manner? Or do contributors all need to be in the same place?
  • India
  • Bangladesh
  • Kenya
  • Uganda
  • Mexico
Events
What events can or should play a role in this project? This can be a work week, a Mozilla event, or a 3rd party event. An event also does not need to be part of this challenge. The work might be able to be completed outside of or independent of an event. Events should be a supportive aspect for the challenges and might be central for only a few challenges.
Yes, events are essential.
