Emma currently leads D&I strategy development for Mozilla's open source projects, and is a maintainer on the CHAOSS project D&I working group.

Description

In 2017 Mozilla generated a series of recommendations needed to build more inclusive, safe and diverse open source projects and communities. One of those recommendations was to establish 'Metrics that Matter for Diversity & Inclusion'. I simple terms, open source communities needed to establish a common, and trusted way of measuring diversity and inclusion, so that project owners could design more thoughtfully, and contributors and users were able to make better decisions about their involvement.

Rather than build in our own project silo, we reached out to the CHAOSS project, and helped establish a D&I in Open Source Working group, where our recommendations for metrics were ported into the first set of [7 focus areas](https://github.com/chaoss/wg-diversity-inclusion/tree/master/focus-areas). While this work is still very much in progress (see working group roadmap for 2019 here), we (Mozilla) invested in testing some of the more established metrics in two case studies that will be shared on this call. Those metrics include:

• Community Leadership
• Communication
• Governance
• Recognition

In addition Emma will share what she learned about the process of establishing new inclusive standards with project teams, and thoughts for next iterations.
