Knight-Mozilla Community Knowledge Coordinator

This is a part-time, contract position to support the Knight-Mozilla News Technology Partnership (aka "MoJo'"), http://knightmozilla.org; The position starts immediately and contract can be renewed every 6 months through June, 2013.


The partnership produces a lot of documentation and public information that must stay current, well organized, and accessible to key audiences. This is done mostly through a Wiki, mailing list, IRC channel, e-mail, and Twitter. Turning these various conversations into useful, public-facing information is the essense of this role. Your ability to be an community ambassador for the program, through your written words, is a definite plus.

You are the ideal candidate for this position if you are:

  • An excellent writer and editor (blogging should be second nature to you, and we will ask to see samples.)
  • Able to produce copy for both technical readers and the general public
  • Passionate and knowledgeable about online news, open-web technologies, and/or open innovation processes
  • A quick study

Primary responsibilities:

  • Attend a weekly team meeting (Wednesdays at noon eastern time) and report back to the community
  • Copy writing: produce the first pass on blog posts and web site copy
  • Technical writing: write documentation for software that is developed by the team, program participants, news partners, or fellows. The objective here is to build communities around these software projects over the course of the program.
  • Editing: quickly review copy produced by the team to ensure that is accurate, follows the house style, and is error free.
  • Knowledge management: collect and organize information produced by the team, participants, community members and partners on the project's wiki page. This includes proactively expanding our knowledge base by researching and documenting news innovations that align with the purpose of the program.
  • Social media management: keep the @KnightMozilla Twitter account updated, promoting the work of the partnership.
  • Monitor online coverage: monitor as website traffic, social media coversations, and press & blog coverage, and report back at the weekly meeting.
  • Clear, regular communication with program manager and the MoJo team. This role requires several skill sets. Any necessary support should be conveyed to the manager quickly so that the necessary support can be provided to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Other program support as required. This could include very occasional administrative or logistical support, especially when the partnership is convening events and meetings, in-person or online.

Skills, Experience:

  • Highly organized, able to coordinate and prioritize several projects and deliverables.
  • Writing and editing for both broad public and technical audiences.
  • Ability to write software documentation
  • Experience producing and managing web copy & social media copy
  • Experience with design and layout an asset
  • Experience reading and reporting on web & social media metrics an asset.
  • Ability to work both independently and in partnership with a fast-paced, geographically distributed team, i.e.: a sense of humor is required.
