Meeting Notes
Richard Mark Matt Carlo Seth Gina Robert Benedict / Noelle / Seth Chun (sp?) (work for Changemakers.com) digital analyst / strategy & social media goddess
Seth with Ashoka What can Drumbeat Changemakers began as a magazine Suzmika Goach (sp?) president of Ashoka (fact check) social entrepeneur in India, involved in freedom movement launched changemakers to expose social change agents in India that concept of change agent near to her heart early 2000, CM transitioned web site from articles / content to particpation and social action on the web
getting interesting short ideas on web through things like competitions meant to solve a particular social problem people could see different submissions and start collectively helping the ideas in some way or another the most possible ideas and competitons various change agents would come together and collectively have impact bring all of their various talents to the idea people can contribute knowledge from so many different locations and together create powerful ideas that create lasting change "open sourcing the idea of social change through social entrepeneurship"
fit with Drumbeat: concept about web site feature various ideas and through open web come together and talk about and contribute and vote on
where they're at now: 30 competitions 3000 entries vast majority of countries represented significant funds pushed toward innovators from partners like IDB and others who have selected grantees out of Changemakers pool skim cream off the top of a process grown from 6 - 8 person outfit, to doubling in size
how do we put collaboration at the center of Changemakers different collaboration than others: trying to provide a place where people create a utilitarian community and sometimes they take relationship offline (e.g., on front page)
Question: what do you know now that you wish you had known when you started?
Getting the social object defined one thing you can point users to to get people to know what it's about the value propositions are often more abstract in social change space, and in a sense philosophical
"Don't fall prey to if you build it they'll come myth" people time is scarce this is the reason Drumbeat exists: without it, the world could not do x
worked to refine and sharpen value proposition larger principles about web in general, what are we really asking our community to do? competitions allow focal point enter competition comment on entries social change and social impact goals
Mark: for drumbeat, main object is the PROJECT as you guys evolved participation call and made message more crisp how much did you evolve the site -- how'd you iterate it?
changemakers.net the print magazine went online and had brochure site that then became online magazine with competitions eventually became competition space
went through major re-design the .com site major departure from .net broke away, sharpened value proposition, flexible enough architecture to do that launched .com one year ago in May? architecture: Drupal CMS underlying it
giving people a toe-hold for an interaction beyond normal set is key have some really excellent social media folks really forunate with Noelle and ability to craft messaging that people understand -- through Twitter and other social media properties the social media work is key: but key is giving people something they can go to consituents with that provides value in non-monetary way
Gina: voting mechanism provides engage an existing community that has grown over time (as opposed to creating from scratch) establish a first online presence that validates their work and if they already have that online presence -- reinforces or validates the work they're doing
Noelle: continue to pull people in through competitions changemakers is in a unique spot as a non-profit, part of Ashoka, broad mission is everyone a changemaker
Carlo - suburban area outside Rome: 4 million people
- Project summary is here:
http://groups.google.com/group/mozilla.community.drumbeat/browse_thread/thread/3b358874293ee460#
- Mark: likes idea of ideas around local community services
- good fit with Drumbeat mix of proposals
- two next steps:
1) What ways are you asking people to contribute?
- e.g, proposing service ideas? help w. ideas already have?
2) many people in community wireless movement
- would be interesting to do some research around community wireless in other communities / countries?
Mark would be happy to work further on this project at Fosdem
Another idea: put out some kind of call, to do some kind of meet-up at Fosdem if there's other community wireless people there could use Mozilla Drumbeat name as umbrella for that
Mark: Alina has proposed a session for Mozilla room before doing that session, try to do a working group really planning what drumbeat opportunities we want to take advantage of should have smaller meeting with the people who are most interested
Gina: interested in helping out with session pick discussion up in newsgroup and carry on there
Mark's January Drumbeat update: http://commonspace.wordpress.com/2010/01/15/january-mozilla-drumbeat-update/
Questions:
- what do you feel like you know now that you WISH you knew when you started?
- project page design -- similar in many ways
- tabbed interface: what's next
