Your web. Your data. Thought leadership and P2P consumer education about taking control of our identities and data in the cloud.

Summary of Problem / Solution / Goal

  • Problem: Dangers in the cloud: While the cloud is a powerful tool for collaboration and sharing, storing data online with others (Google, Facebook, IM clients, etc) can create trust, legal and security issues. This storage and use model can also make private and personal data more accessibe to government, in some cases without requiring user consent. Data in the cloud can also have implications on innovation in terms of competition.
    • Having openness in your browser / operating system is great, but if all of a users information sits somewhere else, all open rules go out window and new set of problems arise
    • Much of the debate so far has focused on what the open cloud means for people building the Internet as opposed to what it means for people who participate in and create the web.
  • Solution: Make sure the values of Mozilla and people who believe in the open web are available in the cloud experience
  • Goal:: Frame the conversation about personal data and identity on the web in terms of helping people make good choices where they can and building a foundation for a time when there are better products to choose from.

Activites

  • Create a white paper at a large event on open data use within the cloud
    • what do those values look like in the cloud world?
    • what are the new products and values?
    • what behaviors awareness and legal frameworks do we need ?
  • Help people discover how their data is being used through games (e.g. online quizes) and inform them of their options at the same time
    • Who owns your picture? From MozCampEU
    • Build a Facebook Application that says “here’s what your settings here” and what the implications are of those settings
    • Surveys on Care2 to create chatter and encourage e-mail signup
  • Make videos / PSAs / run a contest like Firefox Flicks about how to use your data in the cloud
  • Firefox add-on for smart use of social/data web applications
    • could be very popular tool for parents in teaching safe web habits
  • eNewsletter/Blog
    • could be packaged with newsletter/blog content from We Create the Web
    • do a feature each issue reviewing a different TOS/comparing the TOS between networks/applications, use graphic elements (logo system)to improve comprension
    • Over course of year, put out primers on what’s in a TOS on the most popular networks/applications (how they use your data, what that means, how you can control your data within these sites and what options you have)
    • features from thought leadership about data issues
    • Include recommendations/features on open alternatives and how to use them in each issue of the newsletter
    • create articles about educating friends, family, etc on using your data in the cloud
    • roundup of articles/current issues concerning data in the cloud, including opportunities for action (eg. The Facebook TOS town hall: How you can participate)
  • Creating slide decks of eNewsletter/Blog content for sharing at Conga Events

Audience

  • Engages 100,000 people who are about culture / thought leadership
  • Defines the public conversation and involves new people in the discussion

Criteria

  • Fit: Heavily skewed towards consumer advocacy, getting consumers to change from within when there is no ideal alternative. Mozilla will have a product, but timing is difficult
  • Timing: This issue of already being discussed by internet builders and users alike, but it is challenging to dive into the conversation as an alternative product like Weave isn't in market yet as an alternative
  • Appeal: The appeal for this issue is huge as there are hundreds of millions of people using social network and applications that involve their data
  • Impact: People make better choices
    • are involved in imagining, discussing, co-creating the future
    • Shift the market to open options through consumer awareness
    • Prime people for an eventual open product
  • Leverage: Trust in Mozilla values and brand being applied to a complex new thing
  • Fundraising: More of a challenge. Can include a general ask in newsletter/on blog to support the project and it's activities
