Arriving in Berlin

Arriving at Berlin Tegel Airport

There will be Mozilla staff welcoming you at the airport on Friday (Nov. 11) all day and handing out directions to the TRYP hotel and public transportation tickets to all MozCamp 2011 guests. You'll recognise staff by their flashy red Mozilla coats and Mozilla sign

Getting from the airport to the city centre on public transport is easy and fast.
The best way is to take the Airport Express Bus – going either to Zoo station (city west) or Alexanderplatz (city east). Buses leave roughly every 10 min.

Tickets

Berlin is divided in to zones A, B and C. Make sure you buy the right zone for the area you travel in (see map on station platform or bus stops). In the centre area you will need zone AB. A single ticket (zone AB) can be bought directly from the driver for 2,30€/person.
If buying a ticket at the multi-lingual machines, make sure you validate them at the smaller machines in the bus. We highly recommend buying and validating tickets, as they get checked regularly and the fee for travelling without a valid ticket is €40.

A Taxi from Tegel airport to the TRYP Hotel costs around €20.

Arriving at Berlin Schoenefeld Airport

There will be Mozilla staff welcoming you at the airport on Friday (Nov. 11) between 8:30am and 9:45pm and handing out directions to the TRYP hotel and public transportation tickets to all MozCamp 2011 guests. You'll recognise staff by their flashy red Mozilla coats and Mozilla sign.

From Schönefeld, the quickest way to get into the city is by taking the Airport Express (RB14, RE7) – a train service operated by Deutsche Bahn.

Trains leave from platforms 3 or 4 at Berlin Schönefeld Flughafen Station which is an easy six minute walk from the airport terminal.

Berlin-bound Airport Express trains are now marked "Berlin Hbf./final destination" at Schönefeld Station (Hbf. = Hauptbahnhof = Main Station).

Tickets

A single ticket (ABC) from Schönefeld Airport (fare zone C) to Berlin city centre (fare zone A) costs 3,00€ (Berlin ABC) and covers the Airport Express, S-Bahn, U-Bahn, bus and tram. Multi-lingual ticket machines are to be found in the arrivals area of terminal A, outside terminal A next to the bus bays and in the airport station. Please make sure you validate them at the smaller machines nerby. We highly recommend buying and validating tickets, as they get checked regularly and the fee for travelling without a valid ticket is €40.

You may make as many stops or transfers as you like during the two-hour period of validity, however, the ticket is not valid for return or round trip.

Taxi

A Taxi from Schoenefeld airport to the TRYP Hotel costs around €40. The Taxi rank is situated in front of Terminal A.

Arriving at the Central Railway Station (Berlin Hauptbahnhof)

Berlin's new Hauptbahnhof (central railway station) was opened in May 2006. A vast multi-level structure, partly in a tunnel, it forms the centrepiece of Berlin's new railway network.

It will cost approx. €8 to take a taxi from the central station to the Tryp hotel. (See taxi numbers below)

Getting to/from the hotel

You can obtain public transport tickets from the Mozilla counter at the Tryp hotel on Friday and from the info counter at the conference venue (Kalkscheune) on Saturday and Sunday.

1.1) From Tegel Airport to the hotel

Departing every 10 minutes, take bus number 128, direction Osloer Straße - travel for 9 minutes - get off at underground station (U-Bahn) 'U Kurt-Schumacher-Platz' - take the underground number 6 (U6), direction Alt-Mariendorf - travel for 10 minutes - get off at station 'Naturkundemuseum' - take the exit to 'Chausseestraße' - the hotel is located on the right hand side on the Chausseestraße on the right hand side (300m to walk).

1.2) From the hotel to Tegel Airport

Make your way from the hotel to the station 'Naturkundemuseum' (on Chausseestraße) - take the underground number 6 (U6), direction 'Alt-Tegel' - travel for about 10 minutes - get off at station 'Kurt-Schumacher-Platz' - find the bus stop - take bus number 128, direction 'Flughafen Tegel Airport' - arriving after 7 minutes

--> Tickets for busses are bought directly at the driver (tell him what stop you are getting off and he will charge you correctly). Tickets for trains and underground can be bought at the multi-lingual machines direclty on each platform.

2.1) From Schoenefeld Airport to the hotel

Outside the airport building is a bus stop - take bus number X7, direction Rudow - travel for 8 minutes - get off at underground station 'Rudow' - take the underground number 7 (U7), direction Spandau - travel for about 3 minutes - get off at station 'Mehringdamm' - take U6, direction Alt-Tegel - travel for about 20 minutes - get of at station 'Naturkundemuseum' - Take the exit to 'Chausseestraße' - the hotel is located on the right hand side on the Chausseestraße on the right hand side (300m to walk).

2.2) From the hotel to Schoenefeld Airport

Make your way from the hotel to the station 'Naturkundemuseum' (on Chausseestraße) - take the underground number 6 (U6), direction Alt-Mariendorf - travel for 10 minutes - get off at station 'Mehringdamm' - take the U7, direction Rudow - travel for about 20 minutes - get off at station 'Rudow' - take bus number X7, direction Schoenefeld Airport - all the way to the airport

--> Tickets for busses are bought directly at the driver (tell him what stop you are getting off and he will charge you correctly). Tickets for trains and underground can be bought at the multi-lingual machines direclty on each platform.

3.1) From the central station (Hauptbahnhof) to the hotel

Walking

After you have arrived, find the Avis Car Rental office - from there continue on the street 'Europaplatz' (walking away from the station) towards the street 'Friedrich-List-Ufer' - turn left onto 'Friedrich-List-Ufer' - after ca. 100m turn right onto street 'Invalidenstraße' - continue for 400m, then turn left onto street 'Scharnhorststraße' - continue for 250m - turn right onto street 'Habersaathstraße' - walk it down all the way until the end (ca 500m) - turn right on street 'Chausseestraße' and cross the street immediately - you'll find the Tryp hotel at number 33

Public transport

Make your way to the bus stop (follow signs inside the station building) - take bus number 147, direction S Ostbahnhof - after 3 minutes get off at stop 'Invalidenpark' - now walk down street 'Invalidenstraße' (northeast) towards street 'Chausseestraße' - turn left on 'Chausseestraße' - walk all the way to number 33, where you will find the Tryp hotel

--> Tickets for the trip will be bought directly at the driver, ask for a 'Kurzstrecke' (short trip ticket) or say 'bis Invalidenpark' (going to 'Invalidenpark')

3.2) From the hotel to the central station (Hauptbahnhof)

Walk back down Chausseestraße all the way until you hit 'Invalidenstraße' - turn right onto 'Invalidenstraße' - walk until you get to the bus stop 'Invalidenpark' - take bus number 147, direction S Hauptbahnhof - all the way to the end of line, where you'll arrive at 'Hauptbahnhof', the central railway station

--> approximate duration of the trip: 15 minutes

--> Tickets for the trip will be bought directly at the driver, ask for a 'Kurzstrecke' (short trip ticket) or say 'bis Hauptbahnhof' (going to 'Hauptbahnhof')

Checking-in at your hotel

Please check in at the reception desk of the TRYP hotel. Fill out your name and address. Your room is already reserved.

There will be a Mozilla Welcome desk at the TRYP hotel foyer for further information on Friday (Nov. 11) all day.

Check Out time: by noon (12pm)

Mozillians leaving on Sunday (Nov. 13) after 6:00pm can leave their luggage at the hotel.
Please do not bring your bags to the MozCamp venue please!

HackRoom at the hotel

For those Mozillians arriving a little early and who need to get some work done (eg. preparing for a MozCamp talk!) there is a conference room reserved for Mozilla at the TRYP Hotel.

The room is called "GOYA" it's right next the bar in the hotel lobby. Just ask the reception desk where that room is located. NB: since space is limited - please only use this room if you need to get work done.

Going to your hotel from Downtown Berlin

In Berlin there is more than one downtown area:

MITTE - The historical center of Berlin, the nucleus of the former East Berlin, and the emerging city center. Cafes, restaurants, museums, galleries and clubs are abundant throughout the district, along with many sites of historic interest.

How to get to your hotel from Mitte:
Find your way to the S-Bahn station Alexanderplatz (right next to the TV Tower) - take the S7, direction Potsdam, from platform 4 - travel for 3 minutes until you reach station Friedrichstraße - follow signs to the underground (U Bahn) U4, direction Alt Tegel - travel for another 3 minutes - you'll reach U Bahn station Naturkundemuseum. Get off and it's a 300 metres walk to the Tryp hotel.

CITY WEST - Ku'Damm (short for Kurfürstendamm) is, along with Tauentzienstraße, one of the main shopping streets in former West Berlin, especially for luxury goods. Many great restaurants and hotels are here and also on the side roads. The district also contains the Schloss Charlottenburg, Tiergarten and the Olympic Stadium. Schöneberg is generally a cozy area for aging hippies, young families and homosexuals.

How to get to your hotel from City West:
There is a bus service (number 245, direction S Bahn station Nordbahnhof) leaving outside of S Bahn station Zoologischer Garten, heading directly to U Bahn station Naturkundemuseum (an approx. 35 minutes ride). From there it's a 300 metres walk to the Tryp hotel.

EAST CENTRAL - Associated with the left wing youth culture, artists and Turkish immigrants, this district is somewhat noisier than most, packed with lots of cafes, bars, clubs and trendy shops, but also with some museums in Kreuzberg near the border to Mitte. These districts are undergoing gentrification as they are popular with students, artists and media professionals alike.

How to get to your hotel from East Central:
Make your way to U-Bahn station Hermannplatz and take the U7, direction Rathaus Spandau - travel for 5 minutes until you get to U Bahn station Mehringdamm - change into the U6, direction Alt-Tegel - travel for approx. 10 minutes - get off at U Bahn station Naturkundemuseum. From there it's a 300 metres walk to the Tryp hotel.

About the restaurant:

Weihenstephaner Berlin is located in the oldest building in Berlin’s Mitte district. The restaurant features historical vaults and a typical Bräustüber'l dating back to 1749, and if the weather permits, guests can enjoy the atmosphere in a large, lively beer garden on Hackescher Markt or relax in the shade of a charming courtyard.

The Weihenstephaner Berlin is the Bavarian State Brewery’s only "embassy". Come and savour the taste of genuine Bavarian hospitality in a cosy, traditionally styled restaurant.

13 varieties of beer come from the Bavarian State Brewery Weihenstephan, which has been perfecting the art of brewing for almost one thousand years.

Returning to the airport

On Sunday, Nov 13 2011 there will be a bus shuttle from 4pm, departing every 30 minutes, taking people back from the conference venue (Kalkscheune) to Tegel Airport, stopping at the Tryp hotel to collect your luggage.

PLEASE REMEMBER:

You will need to be at the check-in desk 2 hours before departure time of your flight for international flights (including within the EU) and 1 hour for national flights (within Germany).

You are not allowed to take liquids on the plane with you (apart from small amounts in form of necessary medication or for baby food). It is best to finish all of your drinks before going through security - you will be able to buy more drinks at the gate or the main hall.

Also: all sharp items will be confiscated at the gate.

Sponsorship Policy

• Mozilla volunteers who have received an official invitation will be provided two types of sponsorship based on the following considerations:
  • level and relevance of contribution to Mozilla in the past months
  • their role at Mozilla Camp (eg. speaker, member of logistics/planning committee etc...)
  • outstanding Mozilla Reps
  • proximity to Berlin (ie. < 3 hours of travel from Berlin)
  • vouching from community lead(s)
• Mozilla paid staff can participate in the camp with the following considerations:
  • all paid staff are required to provide a short report on their participation at the camp, on what they learned, their key takeaways and the contributors they particularly engaged with
  • an active role at the camp and take on one of the following tasks:
  • give a talk or presentation
  • lead a workshop (eg. BoF, brainstorm, work sprint etc...)
  • recruit and/or train agreed upon number of contributors in their focus areas
  • manager approval to apply with contributor engagement sign off required to attend

Getting around in Berlin

Berlin’s public transit system will take you almost anywhere you want to go, taxis are generally easy to catch and bike rentals make it possible for you to tour the city as you please: Whether you just want to quickly get from A to B or prefer to take your time and explore the city’s sights, Berlin offers you all sorts of possibilities for getting around. Be it by taking a train, taxi or bike, mobility is a breeze in Berlin.

Get on at Alexanderplatz and get off a few minutes later at Zoologischer Garten. Tour the sights of the city on one of the local buses, which take you safely through the city even at night. There are plenty of good reasons to travel around Berlin by bus or train. But whatever yours are, it is always practical, quick and easy!.

Berlin's city centre is very extensive and cannot be fully explored by foot. It is worth experiencing certain stretches by public transport.

BUS

The number 100 and 200 buses drive past many sights from Zoologischer Garten to Alexanderplatz, so that a journey on them is already like a sightseeing tour.

S-BAHN

You can also catch a first glimpse of many sights from the S-Bahn on its raised tracks. On the stretch between Zoologischer Garten and Alexanderplatz you will pass by the Tiergarten with the Siegessäule (Victory Column), Reichstag (parliament building) and government buildings and glide between the buildings on Museum Island.

Other Tourist Sites

The Berliner Fernsehturm is a television tower which rises to a height of more than 360 meters from its futuristic looking base at the southwest side of Alexanderplatz. The tower is the tallest structure in Berlin and can be seen from almost anywhere in the city.

The Berlin Wall, which separated the city in an eastern and western part, was the symbol of the Cold War. Built by the goverment of the DDR to prevent East Germans from escaping to the West, most of the Berlin Wall has been demolished since the border between East and West Berlin opened in 1989.

The Brandenburger Tor is a monumental gate built in the 18th century as a symbol of peace. During the Cold War, when the gate was located right near the border between East and West Berlin, it became a symbol of a divided city.

The Berliner Dom is a baroque Cathedral built between 1894 and 1905. It is located on an island in the river Spree, also known as the Museum Island. The current building is the third church built at this location.

The Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtniskirche or Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church is one of Berlin's most famous landmarks. The damaged tower is a symbol of Berlin's resolve to rebuild the city after the war and a constant reminder of the destruction of war.

Once the busiest crossing in Europe, the Potsdamer Platz was completely destroyed after the war. In 1998 the new Potsdamer Platz, full of modern buildings, officially opened.

In May 2005, on the 60th anniversary of the fall of the Nazi regime and the end of World War II, the city of Berlin dedicated their Holocaust Memorial, designed to commemorate the murder of six million Jews at the hands of Hitler and his forces.

Schloss Charlottenburg is an early 18th century baroque palace in Berlin's western Charlottenburg district. The building burned to the ground during the Second World War but has been completely reconstructed.

Where to buy SIM cards for your phone

We suggest you go to a Vodafone store (or any mobile phone store) and purchase a Vodafone Call Ya international pay-as-you-go sim card for 20€. You can top it up via de Vodafone website and can pay with a paypal account.

Where to take out / exchange money

You could either exchange your money at the airport.

Or: you will find ATMs (Geldautomaten) all over the city. Just take your card and pin number with you, most of them accept international cards and will give you Euros.

Electricity / Voltage

Electrical voltage is the same in all European countries (240 Volt/50 Hz), so you don't need to consider anything if travelling from other European countries. Although guests coming from the UK will need an adaptor as the plug is different in Germany than in the UK. You can find this in any shop selling electrical goods.

If travelling from other than the European countries, please make sure you take into account possible differences in Voltage.
