This pages includes summaries of our high-level goals, KPIs and milestones for Q1. Tying back to our overall goals for 2015 as outlined in the From Mozilla Learning Plan and elsewhere.

Learning Networks: detail

2015 Goal: Learning Networks is focused on the ground game and local organizing. We will measure success in terms of a) PEOPLE and b) CITIES. Increasing the number of relationships we hold, and the number of places we reach.

  • Our Q1 focus is on retention, testing and some incremental growth. From now to April 1, we will:
    • Retain the mentors and educators we recruited last year. And deepen our relationships with them.
    • Develop and test a pilot Webmaker Clubs model.
    • Grow the number of Hive Cities.

People

  • Retention. Retain locally active mentors and educators. By doing x, y and z.
    • Goal: retain 4000 mentors. As measured by: y.
      • QUESTION: what's our starting point? how many people do we have now vs. # we hope to retain?
      • How do we know if they're still active? What's our measure for indicating whether we've retained them or not?

Reach

Cities Test new Webmaker Clubs model. And grow Hive into more cities.

  • Establish and test new Webmaker Clubs model. Pilot Clubs in 20 locales. Work with local leaders to develop curriculum, provide feedback on the model and run clubs).
  • Grow # of Hive Cities. From 7 to 10.

Key Deliverables

Where we are by April 1? What's the value / empowerment to the community?

  • Programs:
    • Hive: We've grown to 10 Hive cities, and have an updated strategy for Hive expansion, including better documentation, fundraising resources, and on-ramps for new members (locally) and new communities (globally). We're growing a portfolio of curriculum incubated in Hive cities and ready for Clubs and others to use and remix.
    • Web Literacy Clubs: We have a new web literacy program created and tested by the community in at least 20 cities, with curriculum, best practices and support to help mentors level up their skills and teach others how to read, write and participate on the web. We've started localizing club resources and seeding with Hive members, and have a plan for scaling the program in Q2.
    • Maker Party: We've scoped how Maker Party 2015 integrates with year-round clubs, re-engages community participation and activates new cities. Training and better documentation on hosting Maker Party events has been tested and modeled in Hive cities to empower more teachers, librarians and organizations to throw their own events/series of events.
    • MozFest: We'll have key decisions made regarding the program and parameters for MozFest 6, ensuring we weave in support, community celebration and expansion of our above programs.
  • Community supports/services:
    • Tech platform/teach.webmaker.org: We have v1 of a site that helps us attract new mentors, and provide pathways for sustained involvement.
    • Curriculum:
      • We have much more refined resources for people who want to teach the web, and a plan for broad dissemination.
      • Our offering seamlessly combines Web Literacy Basics 1 (club curriculum consisting of 6+ activities) with Hive-incubated activities and programs.
      • Small prototypes are underway for bridging beginner web literacy curriculum with MDN's advanced learning offering.
      • Shipped v1.5 of the Web Literacy Map as a framework for others to align work to or be inspired by to teach the web.
      • Shipped Learning Pathways whitepaper to help those looking to Mozilla for guidance.
    • Training: We're better integrating training and professional development across clubs and Hives–with Teach the Web Talks, in-person workshops and other programs to help people level up their skills and engagement.
    • Badges and credentialing: We've made basic improvements to the UX for badge application and issuing through webmaker.org, and a plan for ongoing strategy informed by implementation and requirements of clubs and Hives.
    • Ongoing community engagement: We have a streamlined plan for how community calls, mailing list engagement, blogs, newsletters and light-touch skills development work in harmony across programs to support onboarding and retention.

Leadership Development

Strategy: develop a plan for a leadership development program as a part of Mozilla Learning.

  • KPI: Strategy and resourcing completed by end of Q2

Fellows: create shared definition of 'Mozilla Fellows' across programs and communities. Expand fellows programs to science, computer science and education.

  • KPI: Common definition of ‘Mozilla Fellow’ across existing programs by end of Q1.

Leadership training: prototype a Mozilla Handbook and short course focused on Mozilla values and methods. Run in concert with ReMo.

  • KPI: 100 people trained, 3 iterations of the course and handbook (by EOY?)
