Hi Everyone,

The goal of these bi-weekly reports is to keep you informed and to get you excited about the work we are doing supporting Firefox products across the board. Please don't hesitate to contact us if there is anything we can do to improve this status update.

Identity Status Report for September 3rd - 13th.

Identity Department Focus

The identity team is focused on three key objectives:

  • Fixing Sync - We must fix stability and usability issues in the present sync service
  • One way to log into firefox - A single email / password and experience for Mobile, Desktop, and Web products (like Marketplace)
  • Persona Adoption - We must quantify and increase the number of websites using Persona in Q3

Signin

Project Overview:

  • Persona is designed to eliminate website passwords and empower users to choose their own identity online.
  • It's long term goal is to become a standardized and browser-native means of decentralized authentication on the Internet.

Current Status:

  • Persona now works in environments without popups, including Chrome for iOS and Mobile Internet Explorer on Windows Phone.
  • Prototyped support for cross-domain SSO, in response to feedback from Webmaker and other users.
  • Prototyped support for passing an email hint from the originating webpage into the Persona dialog, paving the way for a seamless transition into the Persona dialog from a website login form.
  • Many bug fixes, visual improvements, and tweaks to copy.

SF Persona Event took place Thursday, 12 September Didem Ersoz, Zach Carter and Dan Callahan presented and worked with the attendees. Didem's notes regarding the event follow:

  • 25 participants vs 158 sign ups
    • I think this is unfortunately a reality of the free events happening in the Bay Area, a huge gap between sign ups and show ups. One feedback we got yesterday was that the start time was too early. So we'll start the next event later and see if it changes the turnout rate positively.
  • Various interest levels observed. There were attendees who already half way implemented Persona, and those who wanted to get to hacking and trying implementing right away, while some others just wanted to learn what it is.
  • Different backgrounds: public health, education, payments, Internet of Things.
  • Different titles: developers as well as startup co-founders, technology consultants.
  • A member of the NSTIC IDESG attended, asked relevant questions, and encouraged Mozilla to join the IDESG and attend IIW.
  • The event can be viewed via Air Mozilla https://air.mozilla.org/persona-sf-meet-up/

Upcoming Persona Event in Mountain View: Mozilla Persona: Simple Sign-in for the Web. Join us to learn more & hack! Are you building, managing, or owning a website or a web-app where users need to sign-in? Join us to learn more about Persona, a simple "sign-in with email" for the Web, developed by Mozilla. We'll be providing an overview of Persona followed by a Q&A session where you can ask any question you have for us. After Q&A, we'll be hosting a mini-hack session for participants who are interested in getting started implementing Persona right away and getting support from Persona developers who will be present in the event.

Mountain View Details: Date & Time: September 25, 5:30pm - 9:30pm Pacific Time Location: Mozilla Mountain View Office. 650 Castro St, Mountain View RSVP: http://persona-meetup-mv.eventbrite.com/

PiCL

Project Overview:

  • PiCL is a project whose short term goal is to fix Firefox sync.
  • The long term goal to give users easy access to their Firefox data from any device.
  • PiCL the name is about the long term goal of PiCL - it stands for Profile in the CLoud. Which is to say we're going to take the interesting data in your Firefox Profile and move it to the cloud - make it possible to access and manage this data from web apps, mobile apps, and all of our products - Mobile, Desktop, and OS.

Native B2G & FXOS

Project Overview: B2G: Sign-in on First-run

  • We are building Firefox Account creation into the first-time use (FTU) on FirefoxOS. When users unbox their phones, they will provide an email and password. From this, we will create a Firefox Account for them that will give them an identity for use with Marketplace and future cross-device services, like synchronization of bookmark, history, password, and contacts data. Additionally, we will provide an account management app where users can revise their account settings.
  • A single place for native implementation overview, status, and teams: https://wiki.mozilla.org/Identity/Native_Implementations

Current Activities:

  • Working with PiCl and Sign-up teams to design Firefox Accounts and the smoothest interaction possible with Persona
  • Collaborating with TEF on Persona in First-Time Use (FTU) flow
  • Collaborating with TEF on Persona account management app
  • Addressing UX, Speed, and Stability bugs for v1.2
  • Working with Marketplace and Apps on app sign-in solutions for dev and prod
