Metrics that Matter - Creating Baselines for Community Health

Research Goal Setting

Currently these are our steps for generating baselines for community health.

  1. Identify research questions, starting with this base set for leadership, tenure, and project-specific.
  2. Identify all existing data sources that can provide insight into the primary research questions.
  3. Document insights provided by those data sources, and identify gaps.
  4. Agree on strategy for gaining new insights, and bridging gaps through survey, interview, addition of new sources to Bitergia dashboard and other mechanisms.

Schedule Interviews

Outreach to date, has been a mix of direct outreach (shoulder tap), and a nomination process (nomination of self, or otehrs)

Although there are many tools that work well, we use Calendly to provide easy-scheduling for 1:1 interviews and focus groups.

Preparing to Interview

This section will walk you through steps for setting up your interview process. By this point you should have your list of people for interview and interview questions.

  • Create a private folder for your interview notes.
  • Make a copy of this Interview Template, and place it in the root of your interview folder. Take time to review and understand the sections of this template for note-keeping.
  • Make a copy of this [https://docs.google.com/document/d/1dDSNRVhOAHjh339WEkRiSGEzxPOLN5g5H9vpoSKnpfQ/edit Script Template) and also place it in the root of your interview folder. Update this script to reflect your topic, preferred messaging and add your questions. Use this document to add comments about questions as you learn how they do, and do not work to draw out insights.

Conducting the Interview

People are most comfortable sharing their experiences in their homes, or in spaces they frequent (like school, hacker labs etc) where possible defer to your interview candidate for their preferred location. If the interview must be conducted online here are some things to think about:

  • Is this person likely to experience bandwidth issues?
  • Is English this person's first language?
  • Does this person prefer time to process their response for any reason? (this can include introverts!)
  • Does this person have technology limitations for video?
  • Does this person prefer to remain anonymous?

If you answered yes to any one of these, then you should consider a text-based chat like Telegram or IRC.

First Language Interviews

Responding to questions in English, when your brain thinks in another language is a challenge of many contributors in our communities. In order to allow full exploration of ideas, and experiences - it's important to provide first-language interviews. This wiki page was created by Outreachy interns in 2017 to capture their processes, and FAQ for interviewing, and translating interviews back to English. Here also is a blog post on their experiences.

Quantitative Standards & Best Practices

TODO: document standards, best practices for data, data structures, and methods for handling diverse data. Including what we learned as a result of most recent survey.

We have leveraged Open Demographics as part of our most recent D&I survey.
