Title of Session (should also be the title of your Wiki page): Thunderbird State of the Union

Facilitator(s): Jonathan Protzenko

Are you paid or volunteer staff?: Volunteer

Area of Contribution (Team Name): Thunderbird

How are you currently involved with the community?: I'm currently involved in Thunderbird: I'm a peer for one of the modules, I review patches, I mentored a student for the Google Summer of Code, and I maintain one of the most popular Thunderbird addons (Thunderbird Conversations, 100000+ ADUs). I've been involved with Mozilla seriously for a quite a few years now (interned two consecutive summers for Mozilla Messaging), and I wrote a book about XUL, one of the key Mozilla technologies, a few years ago.

Location of Work (where do you reside?): Paris

Talk Length (please choose between 30, 60, 90, 120 minutes): 60 minutes

Summary: With all the recent announcements regarding the future of Thunderbird, several people may be left wondering what the project will become. This talk will set things straight, by explaining how Mozilla will remain involved with Thunderbird.

  • We will transition the feature development part to the community. I will detail the current plan which we worked out during the Warsaw pre-MozCamp summit (I was there).
  • There will be changes in governance and in ownership of the code. I will detail these as well.
  • The release process is also impacted. We had lengthy discussions about this in Warsaw, and we came up to a conclusion, which will be announced.
  • Finally, this means that we will need more help from our volunteers: the talk will feature a "what can I do for Thunderbird?" part.

This talk was initially to be delivered by Jb Piacentino (Thunderbird managing director) but due to a last-minute change, he will be unable to attend. I'm filling up for him.

How your session furthers the MozCamp Goals: we have had several students for the google summer of code coming from Singapore, and some of them are invited. This will be an excellent occasion to engage them further; moreover, Thunderbird will depend a lot of on its community so this is a key occasion to grow our community.

Therefore, this talk may be fit for the Grow Mozilla track as well. I'm ok with being scheduled in either track!

Expected Outcome or Deliverable: I'm hoping for people to be convinced that Mozilla is not abandoning Thunderbird and that it is worth investing time and energy into keeping the project alive. The goal is to engage more people, and turn would-be contributors into committed members of our community.

Desired Audience Type or Skill-set: General, there will be no technical content.

Equipment Needs (Video projector already included): None
