Diversity and Inclusion Strategy for Participation/Design Sprint

Background & Purpose
This sprint is a 2 day process, where individuals invested in diversity and inclusion for participation - staff in key areas of the project, community and external subject-area experts come together to D&I experiments we’ll build and run in Q2.
Leveraging the key insights and themes generated during a series of focus groups and 1:1 interviews of the last few weeks, we’ll focus on understanding those themes - sketching & iterating on a variety of possible ideas that we’ll narrow into paper prototypes to help us better understand and prioritize experiments that begin to build a framework for empowering, understanding, measuring and leading a diverse and inclusive community.
This event will bring together key individuals working on D&I inside and outside Mozilla, to design and prototype initiatives that draw on themes and hypothesis gained through the insights phase of our draft for strategy - Both qualitative and quantitative research.
For all attending we will be reaching out to ask the following questions:
- What do you hope to get out of this design sprint? For your own work & goals? Personally?
- What work are you already doing that might be ideal to test some of our hypothesis for D&I in Participation?
- Which of the focus areas of our research most closely aligns with your own work(or do you have passion for) : Event Design, Participation Design, Regional Leadership or Participation.
- What do you think we should consider in designing sessions, and activities for this sprint?

Attendees
Who is attending?
- Diverse Volunteers from the community and Outreachy Interns who have been leading 1st language interviews and other contribution to D&I.
- Staff who :
- Work with and have goals and passion for growing healthy communities (of which D&I is key)
- Who are interested in setting goals for D&I in their part of the project, and then working on those as part of the design sprint, strongly directed by insights and outcomes in our research phase.
- enjoy opportunities to create, innovate, experiment and learn
- External experts
- People who have reputation, experience and insights building D&I in open communities, grassroots initiatives (etc) who can help us think beyond Mozilla about some of our hypothesis and goals - with potential to work together on shared goals in future.

Travel
The best way is to take the 'Canada Line' train. The first train departs the airport at 5:07 a.m. if you arrive in the late evening please contact Francisco to arrange alternate transit.

It is recommended that you carry your invitation letter while traveling and present it to any Border Customs Agent.
- If you're flying from outside of Canada
- You'll be handed a Declaration Card(PDF) on your flight. Fill out this card out before you land:
- the purpose of your travel is "Business",
- declare any gifts, alcohol, or tobacco that you are bringing into the country,
- you do not need to declare personal baggage such as your computer, camera, and clothing as long as you're taking it with you when you leave.
- When you arrive at the airport, follow the signs for "Canada Arrivals" to Canada Customs and Immigration. Hand your Declaration Card and Passport to the officer, and explain that you are visiting for a conference in Vancouver, BC : "Mozilla Diversity & Inclusion Design Sprint". If they ask for evidence of your invitation to the conference, produce the Pocket Letter that Mozilla sent you. The officer will mark and return your card and direct you to the baggage claim. Collect your bags and exit the Customs Hall, turning in your marked Declaration Card to the officer at the doors.

- If you're coming from within Canada, simply proceed to the baggage claim from your gate once you arrive.

Event Format
We leverage the [Product Design Sprint](https://toolkit.mozilla.org/method/product-design-sprint/) framework for this event outcomes - innovating on this design process with humans at center.
- (Prepare) Participants will arrive feeling invested and prepared, and have identified and shared goals for innovating in diversity & inclusion in their own related work.
- (Understand) A framework for understanding the key themes and problems emerging from Insights phase paired with a sharing of goals for is created and shared prior to the event, and event opening to set the stage.
- (Diverge / Sketch) Rapidly develop as many solutions as possible - first individually, then collectively through a series of structured ideation exercises.
- (Converge / Decide) Choose the best ideas or clusters of ideas by discussing, combining, critiquing, and voting. Further elaborate and evolve by creating the user story through storyboarding and other exercises.
- (Prototype) Prototypes for experiments and initiatives in D&I for Q2 have been generated and documented, with clear ownership, action plans for testing hypothesis in existing projects and as stand-alone.
- (Validate) All participants leave with goals for D&I experiments in Q2, and understand how to stay connected, share (and view) outcomes and opportunities to iterate as a cross-organizational team driving D&I for participation success..
